The Difference Between Fire Doors And Ordinary Doors

Fire doors are a key element of any building (excluding residential buildings), providing safe exits for residents, visitors, and staff during evacuation.

The fire safety order states that "all emergency routes and exits must lead as directly as possible to a place of safety". This article will explore the typical characteristics of a fire door so you can understand what to expect from your fire door, or any potential fire door you may purchase.

The Association of Architectural and Specialty Door Manufacturers ( ASDMA ) describes fire doors as:

"A fully installed door assembly, including frame, leaf, other panels, hardware, seals, and any glazing, designed to resist the passage of fire and smoke when closed according to specified performance standards. Fire-rated door = complete installed assembly".

The responsibility for ensuring that working fire doors exist in buildings rests with the "responsible person" - defined under the Fire Safety Order 2005 as an "employer" if the building is to any extent under his control (about the workplace).

Superintendents have several important responsibilities, one of which is to ensure that there are safe routes for people to leave the premises in an emergency. The route should be as short and as far away from the fire as possible - it should be completely clear and lead to a final exit that leads to safety.

What to check on your fire doors

Fire-proof level
Fire-rated doors are rated for fire resistance and are usually made of a combination of glass, plaster, steel, wood, and aluminum. They are designed to stay closed and any gaps between walls and doors must be filled with fire-resistant sealant.

Some fire doors have windows inside and can be made of wire mesh glass, liquid sodium silicate, ceramic glass, or borosilicate glass. Wired glass is usually fire-resistant, and liquid sodium silicate is used primarily for insulation.
